2025 The 3rd Annual Xin-Chun-Bei Kansas City Chinese Speech Contest

Please join us in our second annual Chinese speaking competition, designed to offer learners and heritage speakers of Chinese an opportunity to showcase their skills. Our competition welcomes all levels of Chinese language learners and heritage speakers (in separate competition categories) and will feature Certificates and Prizes for participants!

All speeches should be memorized and delivered in Mandarin Chinese without notes, printed materials, or PowerPoint. The contestant should compose his or her original speech. Speeches may quote other authors’ works but the majority of the work should be original (do not read a piece of poetry written by another author).

Division I: Grades 1-6

a. Non-heritage students

Themes (choose one) for Division I: Group A: “All About Me/One of My Family Members /One of my friends/My pet/ Travel experience / Reflections on a meaningful activity / Cultural sharing.

Speech length: up to 3 minutes

b. Heritage speakers*

Themes (choose one) for Division I: Group B: “My friend/My family/My favorite story/How my family celebrates a traditional Chinese Festival/ How my family helps the environment/ Travel experience / Reflections on a meaningful activity / Cultural sharing.

Speech length: up to 3 minutes

Division II: Grades 7-12

a. Non-heritage students

Themes (choose one) for Division II: Group A: “All About Me/One of My Family Members/Chinese food/A Day I will always remember/My favorite Chinese fable or legend/Comparing Chinese and American high school life/ Travel experience / A meaningful activity / Cultural sharing / Growth experience.

Speech length: 2-5 minutes

b. Heritage speakers*

Themes (choose one) for Division II: Group B: “My friend/My family/My favorite story/How my family celebrates a traditional Chinese Festival/ How my family helps the environment/How I plan to make the world a better place/ Travel experience / A meaningful activity / Cultural sharing / Growth experience.

Speech length: 2-5 minutes

*Heritage speakers are those whose home language is Mandarin Chinese and use Chinese daily. While there is significant variability in proficiency among heritage speakers, the goal here is to provide a fair opportunity for competition to both learners and more proficient heritage speakers. If yourstudent speaks Chinese with family members regularly and is quite comfortable speaking in Chinese, the student should probably compete in the heritage student category. If your student has some exposure to Chinese outside of school but primarily uses Chinese in an educational setting, the student might belong in the non-heritage category. Please choose a category that you think would be reasonably fair to your student and others.

欢迎参加第三届中文演讲比赛！中文演讲比赛的目的是让学习中文的学生有机会展示他们的中文能力。 欢迎不同程度的汉语学习者参加中文演讲比赛，组办方将为参赛者颁发奖杯和奖牌！

所有参赛者须用普通话演讲，不可以看笔记、印刷材料或 PowerPoint。 参赛者需撰写自己的原创演讲。 演讲可以引用其他作者的作品，但大部分应该是原创的。不要阅读其他作者的诗歌。

第二组演讲主题（选择一个）： B 组：我的朋友/我的家人/我最喜欢的故事 / 我的家人如何庆祝中国传统节日/我的家人如何帮助环境/我计划如何让世界变得更美好 / 旅游见闻 / 一次有意义的活动感悟 / 文化分享

演讲时长：2-5分钟

*华语家庭是指母语是普通话并且每天使用中文。 虽然华语演讲者的中文程度存在着差异，但这次比赛的目标是为中文学习者提供公平的竞争机会，如果学生经常与家人说中文并且说中文很舒服，那么该学生应该参加华语家庭学生的比赛。 如果学生在校外接触过一些中文，但主要是在教育环境中使用中文，该学生属于非华语家庭， 请每位学生选择公平合理的类别。
